My purpose for the section of the blog

I plan to use this part of my blog to write down short thoughts about my journey from expert to learner, and the focus on The Long Strange Trip. This will be a place where I write personal notes, pretty much like a journal, except it'll be public.

I plan to write about my trip through Internal Family Systems and what the parts are thinking about where I am and what my life is about. I invite you to join me on this journey and I hope you decide to also participate in our conversations.

Where I've been

For the past year, I've been aimlessly wandering from one idea to another. I thought I was a "businessman," and the truth is, I've been done with that.

I think I finally found a direction that makes sense for me. It's time for me to give up the expert's role, and it's time for me to become a learner again.

I plan to use this space to talk about the journey that I'm on and not especially talk about my health challenges or what I'm doing about that. I'll be using CaringBridge for that type of writing.

Josh's musings sections will explore thoughts I have about life that are not health-related.

My pivot and why it feels right

For at least the last two years, I've felt like I've been lost. I half-assed worked on getting new clients and found that I just didn't have the interest or energy to keep trying to get business clients. It was becoming more work than I wanted to do, and as a result, I just wandered from one thing to another, accomplishing nothing.

Since I've found that I really like being a learner, way better than being an expert. As an expert, there isn't much new to learn. As a learner, there's everything to learn, and maybe I have some theories, but they are just that, theories and nothing more.

I forgot how much I enjoy being a learner. Although it was some of the most challenging times for me in the food service business, the learning that I was doing was the best part. The same was true for life insurance and wealth management. Once I learned, I got very good at delivering results, but the fun of learning wasn't there for the most part.

Now that I've left being an expert behind, I'm looking forward to the next chapter where I'm a learner, and I plan to stay in that place for the rest of my life.

What are your thoughts about being a learner versus being an expert?
